When I was reading through Beloved, one of the most striking images that I just couldn’t shake was the “chokecherry Tree” on Sethes back mentioned at the story’s open. Although the image of a tree of scars seems like it could be beautiful Paul D sets us straight: “The wrought-iron maze he had explored in the kitchenlike a gold miner pawing through pay dirt was in fact a revolting clump of scars. Not a tree, as she had said.”
